University of Alberta, Hiring and Managing

On May 11th, 2022, AI4Society was part of the Chancellor's Forum 2020, an initiative of the University of Alberta Senate that invites the public to campus to engage with a timely topic related to the University of Alberta. Senators assist with the planning of the Chancellor's Forum and engage Faculties and other campus units with expertise in the selected topic, this year called What Does Artificial Intelligence Mean For Me? My Job, My Health, My Family, My Home, and My Community?

Our own director Eleni Stroulia was a panelist in this distinguished group of professionals that included Nicole Denier, Hero Laird, J Ross Mitchell moderated by Ryan Jespersen. A selected group of AI projects from Reverse EXPO was demoed previously outside the theater.

Assessing the Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Africa: To Everyone’s Benefit? MACT Research Symposium Presentation

Students, alumni, and members of the campus community are invited to join us for the 22nd Annual MACT Research Symposium presentation.
This year our presentation will be delivered by distinguished alumnus Kofi Yeboah, Program Officer at Mozilla Foundation, AI Researcher, and former Digital Inclusion Fellow with the Paradigm Initiative.

Assessing the Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Africa: To Everyone’s Benefit?
Historically, the emergence of new technologies has been touted as a key component of economic growth and social progress. However, the prospects from these technologies have been known to bring more social and economic liberation to resourced communities rather than underserved communities. Global social inequality is on the increase regardless of the integration of these advanced technologies. Therefore, why do governments and corporations assume that AI, which is currently built on a capitalist foundation, will be any different? AI is amplifying existing structural inequalities, how do we solve this menace?

Highlights and Opportunities

Responsible AI Event during Canadian AI

Drs. Bagheri (Ryerson University), Stroulia (University of Alberta), and Taylor (University of Guelph) are organizing a Responsible AI session during the Canadian AI conference, May 25-28 2022.

Given the many activities that are fortunately happening around the responsible and ethical aspects of AI here in Canada, we were hoping to organize an event in conjunction with Canadian AI 2022 this year to become familiar with what everyone is doing and what activities they are engaged in.

It would be wonderful to have a unified community here in Canada around responsible AI so we can support each other and find ways to more effectively collaborate and synergize. We are aiming for a casual, discussion-oriented event rather than talks or formal presentations.

We would appreciate it if you could let us know (a) if you are interested in attending the (virtual) session, and (b) who else you would recommend we invite to the session.

Please send us your ideas and comments to ai4s@ualberta.ca

AI4Society Support for Students From Under-Represented Groups

AI4Society has partnered with Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology (WISEST), the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program and Research Internship Experience and the Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation, to enable more students to experience AI on our campus and to increase the diversity of our field.
For AI4Society members who wish to host students under these programs, AI4Society will subsidize the host's costs, so that hosts will only have to pay at most 50% of the internship.
We hope that you will consider hosting a student in your lab this summer and get them excited about AI!

Artificial Intelligence for Public Health (AI4PH): A focus on equity and prevention Summer Institute applications now live

The AI4PH Summer Institute is supported by a CIHR Operating Grant: Summer Institute on Equitable AI for Public Health from the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH).

The AI4PH Summer Institute is an opportunity to expand your skills and knowledge in the application of AI in public health while exploring the potential impact of AI on health inequities.
The theme of the 2022 AI4PH Summer Institute is “analysis of text”, focusing on the use of AI to extract meaningful information from free-text to support public health.
