AI4IA PodcastThe AI4IA podcast series is in association with the Artificial Intelligence for Information Accessibility 2022 Conference on September 28, 2022, which commemorated the International Day for Universal Access to Information. The AI4IA Conference and the podcast series are hosted in collaboration with the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, the AI4Society Signature Area and the Kule Institute for Advanced Studies, both at the University of Alberta; the Centre for New Economic Diplomacy at the Observer Research Foundation in India; and the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica. ....or in you favourite platforms: CIFAR has launched a new call for proposals for our Solution Networks Program under our AI & Society portfolio. Solution Networks are interdisciplinary teams who design, develop and implement a solution to address a challenge around responsible AI development/deployment in a given sector. This new call launched this month and is focused on the theme of AI for health in Canada. We will be seeking networks that aim to solve challenges and barriers to the adoption of responsible AI within Canadian health systems. These Networks will receive more than $800K over three years, and all members must be based in Canada. The deadline to submit is November 21, 2022. Call guidelines (English / French)
Entrepreneurship and Innovation SurveyThe University of Alberta Library Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E&I) Team is conducting a comprehensive needs assessment of the campus community with the goal of creating a Library service model that is relevant and useful to campus entrepreneurs and innovators and which does not duplicate work that is already being done on campus. If you consider yourself an entrepreneur and/or innovator, we invite you to participate in this short survey which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. As a survey participant, you will have the opportunity to enter your name in a draw to win one of 7 fun prizes from the UofA Bookstore. We estimate you have about a 1 in 50 chance of winning a prize! The E&I Team appreciates your participation and thanks you for your time in sharing your insights and experiences. Society, Culture and TechnologyMulti-Agent Pathfinding in Discrete-Continuous Time and Space November 7th, 2022 | In person In the multi-agent pathfinding (MAPF) problem, agents must move from their current locations to their individual destinations while avoiding collisions. MAPF has many real-world applications such as navigation, warehouse automation, package delivery and games. Ideally, agents move to their destinations as quickly and efficiently as possible, however, it is computationally expensive to find optimized mutually conflict-free paths for multiple agents – especially as the number of agents increases. Ethics and Non-invasive Archaeology in Canada November 30th, 2022 | Online and in person Recently, Canadian archaeologists have been called upon by Indigenous communities to provide more expedient and non-destructive heritage management solutions compared to traditional (destructive) archaeology. Although not limited to the geophysical detection of unmarked graves, the recent findings at former Indian Residential Schools have punctuated the urgency for archaeologists to adopt non- or minimally invasive approaches. Mitacs is pleased to launch another thematic call in cooperation with several of our international partners. This is a competitive call for applications to our Mitacs Globalink Research Award program in all areas of strategic importance for the Canadian and international research communities.
Professors can submit projects by November 25, 2022, at 5p.m. PT. NRC and CSIRO AI4D PhD Training Opportunity Backgrounder Canada’s National Research Council (NRC) and Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) are developing key initiatives to enable AI assisted scientific discovery. The convergence of high performance computing, large scale data availability, and robustness in AI approaches, including deep learning will enable AI-leveraged discovery and design. AI provides a mechanism to create
better models and representation of reality that can be used to accelerate simulation-based design approaches and this can vastly improve research productivity. Who Why
