Dr. Ying Cui (PhD 2007), Professor in Education, focuses on the use of different machine-learning algorithms to analyze detailed log data of technology-based assessments (e.g., simulation or education games) in extracting relevant features of student problem-solving processes and interpreting student performances. Dr. Cui has led a learning analytics project (co-PI: Dr. Shiri) at the University of Alberta to utilize student activity data recorded by the learning management system, eClass, for early detection of students who are at risk of course failure. The project allows students to harness the power of learning analytics to monitor and self-regulate their own learning and allow instructors to identify students at risk as well as develop and implement effective learning interventions. She is currently leading a 5-year SSHRC project aiming to development a digital performance-based assessment assessing data literacy.
